why does misogyny exist in hip hop culture?
Why is misogyny present in hip hop in the first place? Some scholars proposed that rappers use derogatory terms to show their masculinity and prove that they can rap. Hip hop, which is a genre of music that mostly involves rhythmic chanting and fast beats, is easily associated with hatred because people tend to speak faster when he or she is angry. Inevitably, many people perceive rappers who can speak quickly as excellent rappers. Therefore, scholars believe that rappers, who are mostly men, directly or indirectly target women to take out their anger while they rap to make a better song.
Moreover, rappers can show off their manliness by doing so. Often times, men who are portrayed as strong and tough has been called manly. In order to represent themselves as manly throughout their performances, rappers have been degrading women. By having a condescending attitude toward women, rappers are able to place women below them, making them feel superior. This feeling of superiority has transformed into a sense of victory, enabling rappers to feel tough and manly.
