Does misogyny matter?
According to Dictionary.com, misogyny is hatred, dislike, or mistrust of women. However, misogyny in hip hop culture does not necessarily mean that hip hop singers express their hatred toward women. Misogyny in hip hop culture, instead, refers to other aspects of hip hop music that support or glorify the exploitation of women. In other words, justifying the ideology of reducing women as objects that needs to be dominated by men.
These glorifications can have a great impact since music became an integral part to our society. It can be described as the fundamental type of media since it can be found in almost all types media - from radio to television. Thus, music is an influencial medium to our society. Consequently, hip hop culture's support or even justification of victimizing women can direct us to a set of relations, attitudes, and behaviours that are embedded within all other social relationships.
