responses to mysogyny in hip hop

In response to misogyny in hip hop, students protested against the issue. In 2004 women's studies students at Spelman College in Atlanta, Georgia protested against misogyny in rap music, specifically, "Tip Drill." These efforts were the precursors to organized campaigns that took place in the 2007 congressional hearing. Furthermore, the women's rights activists criticized hip hop music. Apart from feminists group responding to misogynic music, other women artists responded with reflecting postive aspects of women in their music. Beyonce is a great example of imposing positive messages about women. Beyonce, who is a contemporary R&B singer, illustrates women as independent from men in one of her songs "Single Ladies." As a subgenre of hip hop, "Single Ladies" conveys a positive message to women that they are strong and are capable of making their own decisions, specifically, choosing their own husbands. She encourages women to marry men, who treat them right and marry them if and only if they treat them right unlike other conventional songs that look down upon women. |
