Why do I care?
In class, we read sections of the Race After the Internet and read other articles that studied discrimination and sexism in different ways. In some parts of the Race After the Internet, the author linked Internet accessibility to income inequality; Some articles discussed how gender inequality was reinforced through the development of technology; And other articles talked about how minorities are underrepresented in the media. After reading these articles, I personally thought that it was interesting to view controversial topics in such unique perspectives. Hence, I also endeavored to examine a widespread topic in a different way that affected my daily life.
As a Korean American women living in the United States, misogyny was the perfect topic. I considered to delve into this topic after I saw a Korean reality show called "Show me the Money." In this show many amateur hip hop singers come on stage and perform in front of judges, who are mainstream hip hop singers. There has been many clips from this show going around on facebook. In some of the clips the contestants would use languages that can be degrading toward women. While I have been seeing the comments from these clips, I began to wonder how these attitudes affect our society, more specifcally in the United States since I now live here. Furthermore, I began to question whether misogyny exists in hip hop culture in the first place. Therefore, I decided to study how misogyny is engraved in hip hop culture.
